News of the Missoni fashion clan's eldest son and CEO Vittorio Missoni's disappearance has been making headlines since the plane that left from Venezuela carrying him, his wife, and four other passengers never made it to its destination in Caracas. Rumors of a possible kidnapping and an eerie text message that read, "Call now, we are reachable,'' only helped to ignite the story from sad disappearance to a full-on media mystery.
Despite all this, the Missoni show must go on and indeed it did as the Italian house celebrated its 60th anniversary with its Fall/Winter 2013 menswear colection. The New York Times reports that creative director Angela Missoni "did not wait for the finale to duck out a back door. She was fleeing the scrum of cameras and reporters hoping for further comment on the disappearance of Ms. Missoni's brother, Vittorio..."
The American West was the inspiration behind the collection, contributing to a muted palette of desert dune grays and terracotta as well as plaids and Native American-inspired stripes. A perfect take on the wardrobe of today's man, the collection featured wearable cardigans, chambray shirts, lots of denim, blazers bedecked in the iconic Missoni knit, and an overall look of softness, like the earth-toned clothes would be smooth to the touch, as if weathered by the desert sands.
A collaboration with Converse produced covetable kicks sporting the brand's trademark knit pattern, just another detail that made this a collection you could really live in -- casual and comfortable, polished but without a hint of stiffness. As is evident with its recent and incredibly successful Target line, its no question that the Missoni label will continue on for another 60 years to make clothing people really want to wear.
