Modern Family star Jesse Tyler Ferguson announced his engagement to boyfriend Justin Mikita in a video that also announced plans to launch a line of bow ties to raise money for marriage equality. Now the couple and the non-profit advocacy organization, Tie The Knot, have unveiled their first formal bow tie: The Signature: Wedding Bow Tie.
According to a release, the limited edition bow tie was personally designed by Ferguson and Mikita and is currently available online exclusively at The Tie Bar. As the release states:
"Each signature bow tie retails at $25, is handmade (100% silk), available in adjustable sizes and features a hip, owl print design. Beyond its trendy design, the owl stands as a universal symbol of wisdom, representing foresight, perspective and patience. All proceeds from the sale of the bow ties will go directly to various organizations fighting for civil rights and equality on behalf of the LGBT community. The Signature: Wedding Bow Tie will be available year round, in honor of 2013's march toward marriage equality."
On Wednesday, Ferguson and Mikita visited Chicago. "I certainly respect everyone's right to their opinion, but I think at the end of the day we all have to agree that treating any American as a second-class citizen is not OK," Ferguson told the press that day.
They then went to the Illinois state capitol yesterday, where they had worked with the Illinois Lieutenant Governor Sheila Simon to establish Bow Tie Lobby Day, urging people to wear their bow ties yesterday in support of marriage equality and Illinois's efforts to pass a marriage equality bill through the legislature.
Ferguson also tweeted a pic of himself seated at the Lt. Gov.'s desk urging Senators to pass the bill before the end of the session. Unfortunately the attempts stalled and it will have to be taken up in the next session.
