Slideshow: Puttin' on the Ritts

Los Angeles's J. Paul Getty Museum honors photographer Herb Ritts with a new exhibition, starting April 3rd.

In the 1980s and 1990s, photographer Herb Ritts established a visual signature that has left a lasting impression that can still be felt today. His images were noted for their dynamism, sensuality, and spontaneous sense of glamour (plus he directed one of our favorite Madonna music videos--"Cherish"). His vast oeuvre included fashion photography, celebrity portraiture, and nudes. Ritts, who passed away in 2002, was based in Los Angeles, and its atmosphere heavily influenced his work. Because of that, it's fitting that L.A.'s J. Paul Getty Museum is honoring the lensman with an exhibit--Herb Ritts: L.A. Style--featuring a mix of his most iconic pictures and never-before-seen works. Curator Paul Martineau notes, "This exhibition will reconsider and broaden our understanding of Ritts's career, particularly in the areas of fashion and figure studies.
