Voguing Revisited At Bounce Ballroom

Limber up and get ready for THE dance party of the season.

Voguing's just like riding a bike: sure you haven't done it since 1994, but once you start it all comes back to you. Bounce Ballroom, the party that kicks off the Red Bull Music Academy, at the Brooklyn Bazaar will showcase four exemplary performances of the underground sounds and dance styles that made New York the pinnacle of nightlife.

Tracing the history of the city's club culture from the 1980s through to today, Bounce Ballroom will feature Housing, Voguing, Flexing, and Jersey Club as performed by dance crews who've mastered their chosen technique. Sprawled out over four rooms, each will house a party tailored to each style--complete with a corresponding dance crew and DJ marshaling the party.

While Housing, Flexing, and Jersey Club are all sites to behold--you really should meander over to those rooms during the course of the night--it's the Voguing that's going to be the big draw.

What needs to be said? Mimicking the poses struck by fashion models on magazine covers--hence the name--Voguing was an essential part of the Harlem drag ball scene. Popularized by Paris is Burning and Madonna's hit song, Voguing has come back into...well...vogue thanks to DJs like Vjuan Allure and pop acts like Icona Pop. Bounce Ballroom will have three of the best voguers on the planet displaying their craft: Javier Ninja of the House of Ninja--the house founded by Willi Ninja, the man who thought Madonna how to do it; Dashaun Wesley of the House of Evisu; and Leiomy Prodigy. With DJ MikeQ on the decks, Bounce Ballroom will be without a doubt, the best party until Pride.

Bounce Ballroom will take place on May 1 at Williamsburg's Brooklyn Night Bazaar. You can buy your tickets here.
