Forbidden Love, a GLAAD Media Award and Genie Award-winning 1993 Canadian documentary about lesbian life--both out and closeted, during the difficult era of the '40s, '50s, and '60s--has been given an HD remaster by the National Film Board of Canada for its 20th anniversary and is now available for streaming via the LGBT film company Wolfe Video.
The documentary features a combination of interviews and archival footage ("We used to go to movies and neck," one subject explains) intercut with dramatic, pulp-inspired scenes of a romance between fictional lesbian lovers Laura and Beth. Appropriately enough, the film also features an interview with famed lesbian pulp author Ann Bannon, whose works include such books as Beebo Brinker and Odd Girl Out.
Previously difficult to track down, this re-release marks the film's first official digital outing as well as its first step into HD. It's an intriguing and thought-provoking foray into the lives and culture of 10 lesbians during the mid-20th century.
