On Saturday, the Television Critics Association handed out awards to several queer favorites during the 30th annual TCA Awards, which recognizes excellence in television of the past season.
Orange Is the New Black continued its awards streak, following a GLAAD Media Awards win and several Emmy nominations, with a win for Outstanding New Program. (The show is being recognized for its first season, which debuted on Netflix July 11, 2013.) The show lost the main prize (Program of the Year) to AMC's Breaking Bad.
Despite backlash for its use of transphobic language, RuPaul's Drag Race won Outstanding Achievement in Reality Programming. The Logo TV reality competition was bigger than ever this year thanks to the fandom surrounding Adore Delano, Courtney Act, and winner Bianca Del Rio.
Rounding out the wins for gay-themed shows was The Fosters, which won Outstanding Achievement in Youth Programming. Producer Peter Paige was there to accept the award for the ABC Family series.
Sadly, Jim Parsons didn't have the stamina to beat out Julia Louis-Dreyfus for Individual Achievement in Comedy. Though, Parsons has been nominated in the same category before and is a double nominee at this year's Emmys. Meanwhile, despite its use of the word "fag" and "dyke" this season, Veep tied with Louie for Outstanding Achievement in Comedy.
The TCA has a history of recognizing quality gay-themed programming. Last year alone, Behind the Candelabra, Game of Thrones, and Orphan Black all picked up awards, while Anderson Cooper, American Horror Story, and The Glee Project all were nominated.
