On Wednesday, VH1 announced it is producing a new docu-reality series, TransAmerica, which will chronicle the lives of a group of trans women living in Chicago. The Tyra Banks-produced series will follow these women through the ups and downs of dating, family life and career ambitions.
Carmen Carrera, one of the five featured cast members and currently pursuing her dreams of being a supermodel, is proud and excited to share her story.
"Being a woman means everything to me," Carrera said in a statement. "Before my transition I felt trapped, and now I've been set free."
The rest of the cast includes Giselle, a recent college graduate preparing for her sexual reassignment surgery, Natalia, a beauty consultant for Christian Dior cosmetics trying to reconnect with her family, Sidney, the ultimate party girl, and Victory, who dreams of becoming a doctor.
"TransAmerica is a groundbreaking docuseries that will blow the roof off stereotypes and set the record straight as we experience the lives of these fun, stunning women," Executive Producer Tyra Banks said in a statement. VH1 previously broke down barriers with I Want to Work for Diddy andTRANSform Me starring Laverne Cox. The latter series saw Cox and a team of trans women stylists making over female contestants.
TransAmerica is expected to run for eight 60-minute episodes sometime in late 2014 or early 2015.
