On Sunday, Looking finally premiered on HBO. The show about three gay friends living in San Francisco took its time in the first episode to set up the main characters. It was all about getting to know the boys and setting the tone (no, it's not gay Girls) for the rest of the season. Let's look back on who we met, in GIF-form.
Meet Patrick (Jonathan Groff):
He's a 29-year-old level designer for a video game company. He cruises ironically (though immediately regrets it), goes on bad dates and doesn't care for his ex-boyfriend's fiancé.
(Seriously, what doctor has embossed business cards?)
Meet Dom (Murray Bartlett):
Dom is a 39-year-old waiter who is down on his luck (both personally and professionally), he lives with his ex-girlfriend and is forced to deal with the fact that his age is catching up to him and re-evaluate past relationships.
(Age ain't nothing but a number!)
Meet Augustin (Frankie J. Alvarez):
The bearded fellow is Patrick's roommate who suddenly decides to move in with his boyfriend. Upon making that decision, he engages in a threesome (or a "threeway) as they call it), which forces his boyfriend to ask the question: what kind of couple are they?
(That trick better have been worth it.)
And then there's Patrick's ex-boyfriend who has a joint bachelor party with his fiancé:
If one thing is clear, this show is going to take its time developing the characters. The question is, will Patrick get over his hangups about dating or will he become as obnoxious as he is cute. Meanwhile, both Augustin and Dom has realities to face. It's just a matter of time to see how each one handles their own truths.
