Michael Lucas's Documentary on Russia LGBTs

Reu-russia__002

Michael Lucas is raising finishing funds for a documentary on Putin's Russia and the scapegoating of LGBT

Michael Lucas's work has increasingly focused on exposing the harsh realities facing LGBTs in his home country of Russia. He renounced his citizenship in 2010 and more recently he has been tracking the troubles in Russia associated with its laws against "gay propaganda," and the meltdown of formerly esteemed activist Nikolai Alexeyev.

Earlier this year he went back to Russia to film footage and conduct interviews for a documentary about the LGBT people in modern Russia. On his Facebook page Lucas writes about the project called Campaign of Hate: Russia and Gay Propaganda:

"This is an issue of vital concern, and one that is becoming more urgent by the day. I traveled to Russia in April to interview a wide range of locals about what is happening; their testimonies offer a rich and moving portrait of the growing dangers they face. With the 2014 Olympics in Sochi just months away, it is important that the world put pressure on the Russian government to correct its serious human-rights infractions and protect its LGBT community from further abuse. I have already spent an enormous amount of money out of pocket to finance this project, but important work remains to be done. We NEED your assistance to make that possible. Please help us tell these stories."
