1. On October 17, Betty White will go by Betty Purple in honor of Spirit Day. Alongside her Hot In Cleveland cast members, White (Purple?) will take a stand against bullying and support LGBT youth by sporting the royal hue. Watch the lovely ladies spread the word in this video for GLAAD:
2. Gulf nations want to "detect" gay travelers and deny them entry. "We will take stricter measures that will help us detect gays who will be then barred from entering Kuwait or any of the GCC member states," said Yousuf Mindkar, the director of public health at the Kuwait Ministry of Health. The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is made up of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain and Oman. Homosexuality is not only illegal in these countries, but punishable by death. The GCC will discuss the proposal on Nov. 11. Meanwhile, gay rights advocates aren't staying quiet.
3. Germany claims rainbow Olympic uniforms are a fashion statement, not a protest against Russia's anti-gay laws. The German Olympic Sports Committee told Buzzfeed that "the collection has been designed before the anti-gay-ban in Russia even existed: more than a year ago. The choice of colors are just a fashion statement. Everybody may read into it what he wants." Well, at least Paris emrbaces the rainbow; the city just won the bid to host the 2018 Gay Games. The Games -- if you don't know already, think LGBT Olympics -- is held every four years and attracts over 15,000 athletes. France's Sports Minister Valerie Fourneyron hopes the Games make "for a more inclusive and generous society in France."
4. Wendy Davis defends LGBT rights in the workplace. The Texas State Senator, known for staging a historic filibuster to block a bill that'd increase abortion regulation in Texas, supported the LGBT community in her response to a nondiscrimination ordinance passed in San Antonio, which offered new protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender residents. Davis told the Texas Tribune, "I hope that it becomes something that is commonplace. I look forward to a Texas where we see that in every city in the state...It's important that people be treated equally in the workplace, plain and simple." Davis for the win (again)!
5. Daniel Radcliffe doesn't think his gay sex scene in Kill Your Darlings should be such a shock. Radcliffe told EW editor Jess Cagle that "it is slightly salacious, but if that gets people to buy a ticket, and they end up seeing a one and a half hour drama about the Beat Generation, then I'm happy with that." The Harry Potter superstar then raised a compelling point. People are more surprised about his queer role as Allen Ginsberg than his role as a stable boy who bounded horses for sexual religious worship in the play Equus. "If [fans] stuck with me through Equus, they're not gonna find a problem with this. And if they are, they're a really weird type of bigot."
