Sweden To Show Solidarity With Queer Russians

2,000 people will demonstrate their support for LGBT community in Russia

The situation for the LGBT community in Russia seems to have gotten bleaker over the past few months. From the International Olympic Community's shirking their responsibility to uphold the Olympic Charter, to virulent anti-gay propaganda, times are terrible for Russian gays. In a show of support for Russia's queer community 2,000 people will gather at Stockholm's Olympic Stadium this Sunday and sing Russia's national anthem while raising a rainbow flag.

While cynics may see this action as merely a chance for 2,000 people to feel good about themselves, the aim of this action is not to change the political and legal situation in Russia. Nobody expects 2,000 people singing to make the Russian government do a 180 on their policies. Rather this, like the It Gets Better Campaign, is to provide hope and show support; to show the queer community in Russia that they are not forgotten and the gay community, on a global scale, is trying to help in any way it can.

The event will take place at 3 PM Stockholm time this coming Sunday.
