...And 5 Other Things You Need To Know Today

1. New York Times executive editor Jill Abramson clearly doesn't have a very high opinion of Nate Silver, the statistician who recently left the Gray Lady for a new gig at ESPN. From Newsweek's profile on Abramson: "The first thing [Silver's agent] said to me was, 'I'm in a pretty good position because I represent the prettiest girl at the party.' And I looked at him and I made sort of a face, like, 'Yeah, really?' And then I said to him, 'The New York Times is always the prettiest girl at the party.'" She also said, "Nate is invested in the brand of Nate." She went on, "I was invested in what I thought was a fabulous combination, which is FiveThirtyEight in The New York Times--which I do think greatly increased people's interest in it, and its reach and its impact. And in my view he didn't assign enough value to that, and that's why we lost him."

2. ABC Family drama The Fosters will feature a lesbian wedding on its season finale. By a stroke of serendipity, the episode was taped June 28th, the same day the Supreme Court stuck down DOMA. I will never forget that day when Peter [Paige] and I were sitting behind the monitors in our directors' chairs, just looking at the wedding on screen and looking at each other realizing what happened here on this day," creator Bradley Bredeweg told NBC News. "There were tears, there were hands being held. It was just quite a celebration of the show, of what was happening historically for gay and lesbian couples. It was beautiful."

3. Marriage equality goes into effect in Rhode Island and Minnesota this evening.

4. The Vatican's art collection sure is gay.

5. France is getting its own gay retirement village, and the local anti-gay mayor is "flabbergasted" that he himself approved it.

6. Beyonce released a music video dedicated to Detroit, which needs way more than a music video to keep from imploding on itself.
