Today in Gay History: The Death of Disco

Discorotate

"Disco Demolition" was a meme before the internet.

Disco was already fading from the airwaves when Chicago disk jockeys Steve Dahl and Garry Meier organized the "Disco Demolition," but the event, a massive cluster fuck of 80,000 people trying to destroy disco records between baseball games at Comiskey Park, became the official death knell for disco and all its represented.

Punk was taking over, and it wasn't long before Sylvester was run out of town by The Ramones and gold, glittery body paint was covered with leather jackets and metal studs. A whole new era began after that appropriately raucous protest, held 34 years ago today.

To mark that cultural transition, here's some news footage of the madness, which injured nine, led to 39 arrests, and became a meme long before the internet.
