In an interview with the New York Times, Out Power List-er RuPaul Charles talks on an array of topics from his beginnings as an "outsider," his icons David Bowie and Cher, and about possibly getting married.
"I have been involved with the love of my life for the past 19 years," RuPaul tells Times' Marcus Mabry. "And we may get married just because of business reasons," he lightly chuckles. "But I am devoted to him, there's no piece of paper that's going to change that. It's the most amazing thing I've ever done in my life, is allow someone to love me."
RuPaul also discusses how the increasing acceptance of LGBT rights is due to gay people "extracting the shame of the experience," but what still remains is the shame attached to men and femininity--"even within the gay community."
"It's all about acceptance," the icon says, providing his thoughtful advice: "It's all about knowing that everybody you see, everybody you sit across from, is a different aspect of yourself...Once you can accept yourself on every level, that's when everything opens up. That's when the party begins."
