It seems lately that with every strike of bad news to hit the LGBTQ community, there's always a light at the end of tunnel to brighten things up. Using a more timely analogy, for every Chris Culliver there's a Brendon Ayanbadejo or Chris Kluwe to counteract others' hate.
For further evidence, turn to yesterday's headlines where a lesbian couple in Oregon was denied their wedding cake on Jan. 17 because it was (obviously) for a same-sex marriage. Aaron Klein, who owns and operates Oregon's Sweet Cakes Bakery with his wife, Melissa, recently told NBC that he denied the couple a wedding cake because their lifestyle did not allign with his religious beliefs. Now Klein is tied up with the Oregon Attorney General--it is yet to be determined if he violated the Oregon Equality Act of 2007. Clearly, this can of worms is just breaking open.
In the wake of all this, Ace of Cakes chef Duff Goldman (pictured) has stepped forward and offered to bake the couple's wedding cake for free. It seems that it's not just Top Chef's Yigit Pura putting his skills in the kitchen toward equality. Duff told HuffPost Live yesterday that he has happily made same-sex wedding cakes before out of the Baltimore-based Charm City Cakes, where he is executive chef.
"For a cake decorator to really feel like he really needed to take a stand," Duff told the Post. "It just makes absolutely no sense. It's petty, it's small...this man has wrapped up his hatred in the cloak of religion."
It's thanks to people like Duff that, cake aside, the world is all the more sweeter.
