2013 promises to be a big year in the pursuit of marriage equality in the United States, with a fifth of the country having legalized same-sex marriage (with Rhode Island hopefully to follow!). In celebration of the changing times, Yigit Pura of Tout Sweet Pâtisserie has unveiled a new line of wedding cakes and pastries for same-sex couples, ranging from beautiful tiered cakes to extravagant croquembouches to colorful French macarons.
“I’m thrilled that the legalization of same-sex marriages is making its way across the United States,” says Pura, known to many as the winner of Top Chef: Just Desserts. “Being an openly gay chef, nothing makes me happier than creating cakes for gay and lesbian couples who are about to solidify their commitment to each other.”
Pura collaborates with the couple to create a cake uniquely their own, experimenting with flavors, sizes, and designs to fit the essence of the the lovebirds and their event.
“I've never made the same wedding cake twice!” exclaims Pura. “It’s my goal to make sure that both the cake and the event will be remembered by all.”
Yigit began his culinary training in San Francisco and moved on to New York City where he has worked in the kitchens of Le Cirque 2000 and the Four Seasons Hotel. For the past five years, he has served as Executive Pastry Chef for Taste Catering and Event Planning. Yigit’s cookbook Sweet Alchemy is due out later this year with Chronicle Books and is described as "a baking book concentrating on simple components which combine to craft beautiful multi-layered desserts." And even if he's focused on sweets, from the looks of these recent pics, Pura is also focused on those arms!
