Try to think of a film involving all of these elements: horror, Skrillex, spring break, Disney Channel girls, and James Franco. Yeah, you're right. Film? Bizarro choice.
From the trailer, it seems Spring Breakers can easily be pegged as a new generation's Thirteen, the 2003 movie starring Even Rachel Wood that sort of became a how-to guide for turning bad for the young teenagers who were allowed to watch it.
Director Harmony Korine loves delving into the weird world of young people's obsession with sex and drugs. Remember Kids? This time, college-aged Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine set out for Florida for an MTV-style rager and are seduced into the dark side of partyrocking by none other than a Riff-Raff-inspired character played by James Franco. What?
The story begins when the bikini-clad ladies are having money issues. They meet rapper Alien (Franco), who promises to help them fund their Florida trip, and soon enough, the Disney Channel stars are doing drugs and robbing banks set to the tune of Skrillex.
While the movie's intent may be taking us on a tour through the dark side of an MTV-style spring break or making us feel as weird as Kids or Thirteen ever did, it seems easy to predict it will land in the bin of movies intended to be interesting but are truly just regular old misogynistic displays of young girls' bodies.
Already, the film is building Internet buzz. Haven't you always wanted to watch a menage scene with two Teens Choice Awards favorites and the weirdo James Franco? No, we haven't either. Because that's a weird, gross thing to always want. But I mean, if it's out there, you're not not going to watch it. Right?
Spring Breakers is set to release March 22.
