You read that right. The play, Are You There God? It's Me, Karen Carpenter, is "loosely based" on Judy Blume's popular coming-of-age novel, Are You There God, It's Me Margaret, which was published in 1970 and still remains one of those hot button titles that get parents in a tizzy and have school libraries ban it. This musical parody remixes the story in a distinctive way by using the Carpenters catalog--Rainy Days and Mondays, Close to You, Top of the World and We've Only Just Begun--to lovingly reflect that '70s feeling. A mix of teenage love, bras, sanitary belts, and Drew Droege in drag, this feels a bit like the Carrie musical we always wanted, but better (and without any telekenetic powers or pigs blood).
Originally produced by the Attic Theatre, the show returns August 17-24 at the Cavern Club Theatre in Silverlake in Los Angeles. For tickets, click here.
