Kameron Slade, a fifth grade student from New York City, was banned from giving a speech to his school that advocated for same-sex marriage acceptance and equality. The principal of Queens PS 195 informed Slade that he wouldn't be able to read a speech until he picked a less "inappropriate" topic to talk about, with a portion of the speech reading, "Like President Obama, I believe that all people should have the right to marry whoever they want. Marriage is about love, support, and commitment. So who are we to judge?" Inappropriate? I'm not convinced.
Slade, who had been working on the speech with both his mother and teacher, says he was "disappointed" by the outcome, saying, "I was really looking forward to it. I thought this was a real good winning speech for tomorrow." His frustrations are also shared by his family, with Slade's mother telling NY1, "For him to be denied the right to voice his opinion really upsets me."
