Out100 honoree Stephen Karam's play has been honored by the NYDCC as the best play of the past season. It truly is a remarkable work, and we're excited that such a fascinating play will continue to receive accolades (and hopefully future productions). We spoke to Karam back in November after seeing his spectacular dramedy. He told us:
"The only reason I can do something like that is that I'm standing on the shoulders of a lot of brave writers who blazed a trail. Like Larry Kramer to Terence McNally, Tony Kushner, Craig Lucas. I just think the reality of our generation is that we all know someone who is "post-gay," who came out by just bringing their boyfriends home in middle school. I'm in my early thirties, and I know there are people who came out 18, 19, 20. It's a conscious choice to not shy away from what I know."
Also honored by NYDCC: The award for Best Foreign Play went to Tribes, written by Nina Raine. Once received the award for Best Musical.The award for best play carries a cash prize of $2,500. Also, a cash award of $1,000 goes to the winner for best foreign play. The prizes are made possible by a grant from the Lucille Lortel Foundation. The awards will be presented at a cocktail reception to be held on Monday, May 14, at Angus McIndoe Restaurant.
