California Overturns Proposition 8, Legalizes Same-Sex Marriage

A federal appeals court deems Proposition 8 unconstitutional, thus ending the state's ban on gay marriage.

"A federal appeals court panel ruled on Tuesday that a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage in California violated the Constitution, all but ensuring that the case will proceed to the United States Supreme Court," the New York Times is reporting. In a ruling of 2 to 1, it was deemed that Proposition 8, which was passed in November of 2008, is a violation of equal rights. (Read The Advocate's coverage, here.)
