Cynthia Nixon hates the word "bisexual."
"I don't pull out the 'bisexual' word because nobody likes the bisexuals," the actress told The Daily Beast. "Everybody likes to dump on the bisexuals."
Any the past few days, everyone's been dumping on her.
In Sunday's New York Times Magazine, the one-time Sex and the City star, now preparing for the lead role in the Broadway show Wit, was profiled and she said some things that have LGBT activists up in arms.
"For me, [being gay] is a choice. I understand that for many people it's not, but for me it's a choice, and you don't get to define my gayness for me," Nixon, who famously started dating Christine Marinoni in 2004 after leaving her longtime male partner, told the mag.
This, of course, got under the skin of people who have long fought for acceptance of the idea that people are born gay and do not become that way by choice.
In the interview with the Daily Beast, however, Nixon attempted to smooth things over, stating that, "I understand for political reasons why some people want to kind of squelch this idea that being gay might be a choice, because a lot of the rights we want are posited on the supposition that why are you denying me my rights any more than if I were created a different color? But I don't feel the need to cede the definition of what a gay person is to the bigots."
Standing up for her own sexuality--something, Nixon says, that mostly older people are hung up on--she said, "They don't get to define who I am."
