If you read this blog semi-regularly and are insightful, you may note that, recently, the entire editorial staff of Out is watching Downton Abbey obsessively.
And by obsessively, we mean inventing-meetings-in-the-middle-of-the-day-to-discuss-how-Lady-Mary-should-best-woo-Matthew-Crawley-back-into-her-arms-in-our-conference-room obsessed. Or giant-magazine-wide-email-chains-debating-which-members-of-staff-are-which-characters obsessed. (I'm Mrs. Bates!)
So it's the highlight of our week (just beyond watching a reel of the Dowager Countess's saucy, self-aware asides over and over again) to learn that creator Julian Fellowes is considering taking the Masterpiece series to the silver screen.
The Mirror reports that Fellowes, after winning this year's Golden Globe for Best Miniseries, was swamped by film directors and producers asking about movie possibilities.
"Reese Witherspoon and Meryl Streep were also seen chatting and congratulating him," wrote The Mirror.
First of all, if this were to happen, Fellowes should do everything in his power to keep Reese Witherspoon away from this project. Did anyone see Vanity Fair? She was atrocious as a British person. But Meryl? Would Fellowes consider casting her as every role? I know that sounds unorthodox, but I think she could pull it off.
Just imagine--Meryl as Maggie Smith as the Dowager Countess chiding Meryl as Lady Sibyl Crawley for flirting with Meryl as Branson, the handsome, self-righteous chauffeur.
Wait, what? Your mind JUST EXPLODED? Sorry! We'll have O'Brien come and clean it up.
