Ryan Gosling: Being Fugly Got Me Famous

'Notebook' director told hunk he was busted.

Ryan Gosling became a star because he's so damn ugly.

At least that's what the Drive star told British magazine Company.

When Gosling was cast in his breakout role in The Notebook, it was because director Nick Cassavetes thought he lacked conventional sex appeal.

"The director, Nick Cassavetes, called me to meet him at his house," Gosling told the mag. "When I got there, he was standing in his back yard, and he looked at me and said, 'I want you to play this role because you're not like the other young actors out there in Hollywood. You're not handsome, you're not cool, you're just a regular guy who looks a bit nuts.'"

While plenty of people, including Bradley Cooper, might disagree with Cassavetes, we're sure they're still grateful that his tearjerker catapulted Gosling to fame.
