The New York Times Gives Advice On the Proper Attire for a Gay Wedding

The effects of historic passage of the bill that allows same-sex couples to marry in the state of New York earlier this summer are still being felt. But The New York Times fashion critic Cathy Horyn deals with the most important: what do bride-bride and groom-groom couples wear when walking down the aisle? "A gay aesthetic has long informed fashion," notes Horyn, "but it's going to be interesting to see how quickly retailers respond to gay people as a segment of the wedding market."

Horyn notes that J. Crew is planning on making some adjustments to their wedding offerings for lesbian couples but that gay couples getting hitched have their own special sartorial reservations. She confers with the men's fashion director of the Times' style publication T, Bruce Pask. "Do we coordinate? Do we mismatch? Do we not care about that all?" he ponders.

Pask takes three couples and styles them in three different ways, according to their indivdual preferences. A more distinguished pair have similar steely suits from Calvin Klein, while another wears a Comme des Garcons lace button-down (above left) . One half of the third pair wears a white short-suit from Givenchy with a bird of paradise print on it.
