Iowa State Daily reporter Barry Snell had the chance to spend half an hour in a cab with presidential hopeful and 12-term congressman Ron Paul (you can read the whole interview here). Among other questions, Snell asked Paul about his thoughts about gays and lesbians serving in the military, particularly now that DADT has gone the way of the battering ram and the cannon.
Paul sees no problem with gays serving in the military, as long as they're not "doing things they shouldn't be, if they're disruptive..." we assume by this he means shacking up in the same bunk, not blasting Gaga after a long day in the line of duty. Then Paul really won our hearts by pointing out the obvious:
"But there's ... men and women getting into trouble with each other too. And there's a lot more heterosexuals in the military, so logically they're causing more trouble than gays. So yes, you just have the same rules for everybody and treat them all the same."
And he's right - just statistically speaking. Though we don't see the point of this sex-negative take on the military. There are actually plenty of happy dual-military couples out there, and let's not forget what made the Spartans such a top-notch fighting force...
(In case you were wondering, that's Ron Paul when he served in the US Air Force in the 1960s. Woof.)
