Looking for a few new villains to rally against? Well, do we have two doozies for you.
Ghana's Western Region Minister has just ordered that all gays and lesbians in the area be arrested, reports PinkNews.com. Paul Evans Aidoo has asked the region's Bureau of National Investigators to dedicate themselves to locating anyone who is engaging in same-sex relations so they can be brought to trial for what many in the country consider "an ungodly and demonic act." Some reports have claimed that there are "8,000 suspected homosexuals and lesbians" in the combined Western and Central regions of the African nation, but Aidoo, presumably sickened by that thought of that many queer people existing in his country, says he isn't convinced. "I don't believe it; nobody believes it. We do not see them," he told Joy News.
Not to be outdone by Aidoo, Hon David Tetteh Assuming, a senior member of Parliament (pictured left), is also rallying against gays and lesbians in the country and warns that they should move before they become the victims of violence or even lynching, reports GhanaWeb.com.
"I am sending a sign to these people that they will not have it easy in this country," Assuming says. "They can leave here and go to other places to practice that. But in this country, I believe that they are treading on dangerous grounds and they could face lynching in future. Being a God-fearing nation and a God-fearing people, let us not joke with this issue and let us not talk about any issue of human rights. This is uncultured, anti-Ghanaian and if care is not taken, these people will face a very tough time in future."
It really puts our own fight for equality in the U.S. into perspective and reminds us how far we still have to go here and around the world.
