Fashion Q&A: Andrea Pompilio

When we came across the work of Italian designer Andrea Pompilio, we were immediately smitten.

When we came across the work of Italian designer Andrea Pompilio, we were immediately smitten. There was a confident sense of youth and playfulness to his work, but it was tempered with a discerning eye for quality fabrics and stunning craftsmanship. This blending of jocularity and heritage is hard to find in Italy, where suiting is a very serious business. Pompilio cut his teeth at illustrious design houses such as Prada, Yves Saint Laurent and Calvin Klein before launching his own label for fall 2011. Since he's based in Milan, we shot over a few quick questions for the designer, who may be short on words, but is long on talent.

OUT: What was your first thought when you woke up this morning?
Today is a perfect day and I will spend it...

What is your favorite dish -- is it from a restaurant or a homemade dish
The last one I had. I live for the moment so I enjoy everything at its maximum.

What is your first memory of thinking about fashion?
My grandmother's clothing shop in my hometown Pesaro, Italy.

Did you go to school to study fashion?
Yes. I studied fashion design at the Institute of Art in Pesaro and then completed my learning with Master's degree at the Marangoni Institute, Milan.

What would you be doing if you couldn't design fashion?
I would not be Andrea Pompilio, I guess. Depending on who I was, I would do whatever would express that person's personality.

What is your idea of a perfect Sunday?
A brunch with my friends on my newly acquired terrace -- I just moved into a new flat.

What do you do to get ideas when you aren't feeling inspired?
I go for a tour of vintage and second-hand shops. I have always been inspired my old military styles of dressing.

Who is your favorite writer? Artist? Filmmaker? Photographer? Magazine? Why?
My favourite artist would be a mix of Richard Serra and Jackson Pollock -- Pollock because of his use of bold colors, and Serra for his very minimalist and clean aesthetic. However, I like that they're curvy and not too rigid or stiff. As for a filmmaker, it would be Wong Kar Wai because I enjoy the stories he tells and how he combines different colors and lighting effects. My favorite photographer is Guy Bourdin -- again for his use of color, femininity and sexiness, plus the contrasts with light. I don't have just one favorite magazine -- they're all so different.

Who do you want to see in your designs? Who do you have in mind when you design?
Nobody in particular or everybody in general. I design and try each prototype on myself. My approach could be defined as 'impeccability at ease'.

When you're not designing, what are you doing? What hobbies do you participate in to get your mind off of work?
I see art exhibitions, spend some times with friends, and relax enjoy time in my new home. To be honest, I don't have much free time left and I am fortunate enough to have fashion design as a hobby.
