Just because you can wed someone, doesn't mean you should. At least, that's what Dr. Neil Clark Warren thinks in a column he wrote for The Huffington Post today. Drawing on stats from the U.S. Census Bureau and The Pew Research Center -- which forecasted the downfall of marriage -- Dr. Clark claims that we need to start reevaluating what makes our partner worthy of being deemed marriage material.
Basically, it goes like this: Don't choose your lawfully-wedded-but-soon-to-be-divorced spouse on surface level attractions. Just because that cute someone can quote every episode of Torchwood, too, doesn't necessarily mean you should put a ring on it.
As the good doctor put it, "Staying deeply in love with someone happens gradually and requires conscious decisions, made over and over again, for a lifetime."
In short -- make sure it will work 20 years down the line. As exciting as marriage equality is and as exciting as all of its possibilities are becoming -- heed Dr. Clark's advice before you rue the day gay matrimony became legal.
