Stop me if you've heard this one before: A celebrity makes a defamatory or hurtful statement toward a select group of people (always on accident), gets burned by peers, then releases a well-publicized apology soon after. Oh, you have? Then cue the snare drum and symbol, as comedian Tracy Morgan apologizes to the LGBT community for his anti-gay remarks at a recent Tennessee performance.
After a slew of public apologies, Morgan joined a conference call with GLAAD President Jarrett Barrios, where he said he would meet with people affected by anti-gay violence and prejudice. Morgan will also take part in GLAAD's upcoming "Amplify Your Voice" PSA campaign, which targets bullying against the LGBT community.
While it's a step in the right direction, we don't know if will be enough for Morgan's 30 Rock co-star, Cheyenne Jackson. On Saturday Jackson told Out that he was "disgusted and appalled" by Morgan. "I'm incredibly disappointed by his actions, and his apology better be sincere," he said. As all good comedy is in the timing, we'll have to wait and see how this latest ignorant "slip of the tongue" pans out.
