On the heels (haha) of the pink-toenailed signs of Armageddon, J. Crew has once again had the audacity to treat its customers and employees like mature, judicious grown-ups who are also caring human beings. How dare they! A new catalog for the company features two men, one reaching out and grabbing the others' bicep, with the caption: "Our designer Somsack and his boyfriend, Micah" (see above). As usual, J. Crew is handling the situation perfectly -- treating the fact that they featured two grown men in a consensual relationship -- as a total non-issue. Many people see it as a subtle, but clear indication that J. Crew will not be backed into a corner and is fully committed to supporting diversity in their workplace and amongst their customer base. But ABC News thinks that its worth bringing up as talking point with an article titled "J. Crew at Center of Gay Politics with Openly Gay Model." The article features the picture above with the caption: "J. Crew's new catalog includes an explicit ad of a same-sex couple." First off, they aren't models -- one is a designer for the company and the other is his partner -- they were not hired to play "roles" in an advertisement. Secondly, we'd hardly call that picture explicit -- were it not for the subtitle, that picture could be interpreted many different ways.
Regardless, we have to give J. Crew another virtual high-five for continuing on with their inclusive attitudes and advertising campaigns that look to a future where prejudice is a thing of the past (at least critics are ignoring the fact that the couple is inter-racial, right?).
