According to Michelle Rex, interim deputy for Councilman John D'Amico, citizens from the Los Angeles enclave of West Hollywood (the city's gay "ghetto" -- for lack of a better term) have been calling City Hall and requesting that a street be named after the recently deceased legendary film star Elizabeth Taylor. Crediting both her monumental achievements in both film and theater and her trailblazing dedication to raise awareness and funds for HIV and AIDS victims, it seems that residents feel that her legacy is a particularly potent one to the gay community. Says the article:
AIDS Healthcare Foundation president Michael Weinstein pointed out that at a time when many people in Hollywood and across the country were silent about AIDS, Taylor took on President Ronald Reagan for not acting more quickly to fund AIDS research.
Go girl! The article also went on to make a rather interesting point:
The New York Times, in fact, reported last week that Taylor was a regular at (local gay bar) The Abbey in West Hollywood, hanging out with gay folks and sipping shots of Tequila. She was practically a local.
What!? We knew that Liz loved a homo or two in her day, but never did we ever catch wind that girlfriend was taking shots with the boys on Santa Monica Boulevard. But, that's the thing about Taylor, she was a woman of passions, excesses and was always apt to surprise you.
