When I awoke this morning and heard about the passing of writer-producer Perry Moore, I was stunned, as I'm sure most everyone else was. I was familiar with Perry from my days working at Paper magazine, but it wasn't until after his book, Hero, was published and I interviewed him for Out that I really got to know him.
I spoke with him about his book and the upcoming television adaptation he was working on with comic book legend Stan Lee. We tried to arrange a lunch date where we could sit and talk about surfing and comics (hobbies we both loved), but since he was usually travelling for work on the film adaptations of The Chronicles of Narnia (he was a producer), our schedules never seemed to sync up, and the comic lunch date never panned out.
I spoke with him again a few months later and we talked about the developments on the next book he was writing and how the Hero television pilot was moving along. It was great to chat with him about the exciting things coming up in his life and all of our favorite comic characters and story arcs. We also spoke about the time I saw him at a comic book show at the Peoples Improv Theatre where he talked about gays in comics. Perry's endeavoring to get more gay characters in the comics world was pioneering, and I was thankful for him. Perry Moore was someone I truly looked up to, a real hero of mine, one of a kind, and I wish now more than anything that we could've met up for lunch and talked about comics long into the afternoon.
