This weekend the legendary Joey Arias returns with his first concert engagements in New York City in nearly a decade. With music directed by Ben Allison (Newport Jazz Festival), a rising star on the new jazz scene, and produced by "downtown impresario" Earl Dax (Weimar New York), the concerts will feature Arias's signature "channeling" of Billie Holiday and other favorites from the Arias oeuvre as well as original songs and a few surprises.
We caught up with the goddess to chat about the first night he did drag -- at an Andy Warhol party -- his new show, and his fascination with Billie Holiday:
Joey Arias in Concert plays a strictly limited engagement of four performances on October 1, 2, 8 and 9, 2010 at 8:00 pm at Abrons Arts Center, 466 Grand Street (at Pitt) in New York City. Tickets are $25 and available online here or by phone at (212) 352-3101.
