Of course, it wasn't all about Gaga -- though she did win more than half of all the awards doled out this year. Out managed to track down some of our very favorite artists including Robyn, Cascada, breakthrough Canadian electro house phenomenon >DEADMAU5 and also chatted with Sammi "Sweetheart" Giancolo from MTV's Jersey Shore about gay rights.
Prior to the VMAs, MTV announced that DEADMAU5, the DJ who truly broke onto the scene with his second album, For Lack of A Better Name, previewed for us how he planned to set the mood for the evening: "It will be my kind of imprint on other people's work and some of my own stuff in the mix as well just to keep everybody happy." That mission was easily accomplished.
Natalie Horler of Cascada, whose hit "Evacuate The Dance Floor" became a club smash and engenders a response that completely contradicts its title, raised our blood pressure with news that the trio's upcoming album (their fourth) is anticipated for release at the beginning of 2011. "We definitely love the trend of this new electro dance -- so we're bringing our old stuff into the new and I think it's going to be exciting," she added.
Pop star Robyn, who just last week released Body Talk: Pt.2, home to the new single "Hang with Me," expressed some surprise that people -- including Out -- sensed a significant difference between the tone of her first and second discs (her dance-floor anthem "Dancing on My Own" hails from Body Talk: Pt. 1). At the awards, DEADMAU5 dropped a killer rendition of that single.
Wrangling up the complete cast of Jersey Shore proved more challenging than herding tan (and extremely muscular) cats in neatly pressed suits, but we managed to catch Sammi (who looked stunning in person). Out brought up a Village Voice cover story on the housemates that coincided with Gay Pride this year. "I'm all for gay rights," Giancola said emphatically. "And I'm really proud of the guys for doing that cover," she added.
The MTV VMAs were broadcast around the world through MTV's networks and properties. A slew of A-Listers -- from Lindsay Lohan to Justin Bieber to Cher -- were on hand for the festivities, but the night belonged, unquestionably, to Lady Gaga.
"God put me on Earth for three reasons: To make loud music, gay videos, and cause a damn raucous. Thank you MTV!" And, to that, all we can say is, "Amen."
Head here for a slide show of some of our favorite moments from this year's VMAs, and head here for our sampling of the gayest VMA moments over the 27 year history of the awards.
