Born in Upstate New York with a background in neither fine arts, nor business, Michael Breyette (site possibly NSFW) manipulates pastels to render captivating illustrations of man in all his glory. Combining a pop artistry with a self-taught method that can get you lost in blue eyes forever, Breyette's newest collection, "Iconic," features images that make a man rise above the pedestrian and onto the pedestal of culture.
Breyette's artwork often features a single or coupled male in a state of undress. His works play with sexuality, gender expression, nudity and sporty patriotism, which he says comes from sexual tyranny. "Out of repression comes expression," Breyette writes in an e-mail. "For me, it's through my artwork; otherwise, I'm a rather reserved guy."
Usually completed in around two to four weeks, Breyette's pastels express, more often than not, what he describes as "quiet strength and beauty." Breyette says he started drawing as a kid, sketching males as an extension of being a hormonal adolescent. "I get ideas and inspirations from things I see in everyday life. Anything might trigger an idea," he explains of what inspires him, "then I just jot it down and hopefully get to it before the spark fades out."
Michael Breyette's show is on display July 9 through July 21 at the Lyman-Eyer Gallery in Provincetown, Mass., with a reception July 9 from 7 to 9 p.m.
