Broadway rom-com-dram Next Fall performs her last show July 4, after only four months on the Great White Way. According to the show's producer, the team decided to close the production following poor sales.
Next Fall revolves around two gay men, one a devout fan of religion, the other not so much, as they deal with family and the consequences of car crash-induced head trauma. The New York Times ran an article earlier this year looking at gay theatre's abandoning political topics in favor of marketing more mainstream love stories, before posting a less-than-encouraging look at the play a month later.
While gays and religion worked for Angels In America, the topic may have proved too difficult this time around to market mainstream. Although nominated for two Tony's, Next Fall's Off-Broadway-appeal was perhaps lost in translation. Look for the play's actors panhandling outside Helen Hayes; I'm sure any donations are tax deductible.
