This past Saturday, amidst the ruckus and hoo-ha that is NYC Pride, some of comedy's finest gathered at The Gramercy Theatre for a special edition of the much renowned Celebrity Autobiography. Barefoot Wine & Bubbly sponsored the event with a pre-show gathering in the underground "Foot Fetish Lounge" -- which was not even half as creepy as it sounds.
Celebrity Autobiography, created by Emmy winner Eugene Pack and Dayle Reyfel, places celebrities on stage, reading and acting out other celebrities' memoirs. The result is something unimaginably hysterical and the show's critical success proves it. It's been called everything from "brilliant" by New York magazine to "the funniest docu-drama of the year" by Time.
The special gay pride edition featured many a gay favorite -- Mario Cantone, John Cameron Mitchell, Kristen Johnson, Rachel Dratch, B.D. Wong, Bruce Vilanch, and someone the show rightfully refers to as "the statuesque beauty that is Cheyenne Jackson. The cast reenacted some of the most ludicrous moments in actual celebrity autobiographies from the likes of Star Jones, Debbie Reynolds, Elizabeth Taylor, Suzanne Somers, and Destiny's Child -- just to name a few. You can't make this stuff up.
Cheyenne, who first got involved with the show over two years ago, told me the show has taught him how not to write a memoir, should he ever write one (and here's to hoping he does). He said, "Sylvester Stallone wrote a whole chapter about his fridge. Seriously, what the fuck?" But thank God for people like Stallone because that's what Celebrity Autobiography's all about.
