Nicole Scherzinger and Derek Hough put together a powerhouse performance as quickstepping sailors dancing to Cole Porter's "Anything Goes." Unfortunately it wasn't a proper enough ballroom dance for the judges, but as a performance, it's hard to deny the power and appeal, even if you aren't a showqueen.
But the heart favorite for this week is Niecy Nash, who collaborated with her partner Louis Van Amstel on a waltz about the inability to marry the one you love, set to a favorite modern wedding classic, Billy Preston and Syreeta's "With You I'm Born Again."
For ABC and the loyal grandmas who tune in, that is pretty bold statement. Louis managed to both out himself and make a stand on gay marriage without actually using the words, but still making it pretty clear what he's talking about. And Niecy showing tears of support and understanding? I'm in love.
While worried such 'radical' pro-homo sentiments could hurt Team Niecy, she was announced safe early on in the results show, and eventually, the humane choice was made: octogenarian Buzz Aldrin was sent home. I'm not entirely convinced he didn't get the votes to stay on, I just think ABC producers realized they made a horrible decision in having the esteemed astronaut on the show, forcing the judges to harshly critique America's grandpa who clearly can't compete against a Pussycat Doll. It was awkward to watch him dance, but more so to hear them try to be gentle and honoring of his character while giving him scores of straight 5s.
Now let's hope next week is the last for Kate Gosselin, as she should be eliminated for her awkward angry dancing to Lady Gaga's Paparazzi.
