Need To Know: Matt Morris

1.5.2010

By Noah Michelson

If Matt Morris looks a little familiar, it might be because he harbors the same dirty secret that Justin Timberlake, Britney Spears, and Christina Aguilera all share: he used to be a Mouseketeer. Since escaping the Magic Kingdom, Morris has spent his time writing songs for and with Timberlake (he co-penned "Another Song," off of FutureSex/LoveSong) Aguilera (he co-wrote several songs off of Stripped including the hit "Can't Hold Us Down"), and Kelly Clarkson ("Miss Independent"), among others, and today the openly gay singer-songwriter (sorry guys -- he's married) releases his own debut album, When Everything Breaks Open.

We caught up with Morris -- who we celebrated as one of our 2009 Out 100 honorees in the December/January issue of Out -- to chat about his new album, the differences between writing a track for someone else and himself, and what he learned from his days at Disney:

After, Morris was nice enough to treat us to an intimate acoustic version of his song "The Un-American":

Morris will perform on The Late Show with David Letterman next Friday, January 15. When Everything Breaks Open is now available in stores and on iTunes. For more info on Morris, check out his official site.
