Chris Christie may soon be the governor of New Jersey but Bruce Springsteen is still the Boss. Springsteen refused a request that he perform at the forthcoming inauguration of the Republican elect, and used the occasion to voice his opposition to Christie's anti-equality stance. A Boss fan who boasts that he's attended more than 120 shows, Christie has said he would veto a same-sex marriage equality bill. Springsteen, a longtime gay rights proponent, demurely declined the invitation to perform on the grounds that he "didn't want to get involved in state politics," but also posted a statement on his website this week urging support of the marriage bill that's up for a vote in the state Senate on Thursday.
"I've long believed in and have always spoken out for the rights of same sex couples and fully agree with Governor Corzine when he writes that, 'The marriage-equality issue should be recognized for what it truly is -- a civil rights issue that must be approved to assure that every citizen is treated equally under the law,' " the announcement reads. "I couldn't agree more with that statement and urge those who support equal treatment for our gay and lesbian brothers and sisters to let their voices be heard now."
