Lately musical movie hype has been all about the upcoming Fame remake, due out September 25. Don't worry, I'm just as excited for Megan Mullally to be in something successful post-Karen as you are. But something even better is just around the corner.
The first ever film version of the classic Broadway musical Nine is set to hit theatres November 25. While it may not have Fame's campy appeal, it's got a hell of a lot going for it. For starters, there's the fact that Nine is fresh -- something the average person hasn't seen. The original Broadway show, based on Fellini's 8 1/2, was produced in 1982, winning five Tony awards, including Best Musical.
The story revolves around famous Italian filmmaker Guido Contini who goes through a mid-life crisis and must deal with the women of his past and present.
The new movie version is being helmed by director (and choreographer) Rob Marshall, who you may remember for directing the ridiculously awesome and successful film version of Chicago. With big name directors comes big name actors, so the film's leading man is none other than Daniel Day-Lewis. He's joined by Marion Cotillard (his wife), Penelope Cruz (his mistress), Dame Judi Dench (his costume designer), Nicole Kidman (his muse), and Sophia Loren (his mother). Oh snap.
There are only two things that may be standing in between this film and Academy glory, and their names are Kate Hudson and Fergie. Kate Hudson plays an American journalist, and Fergie, ahem, a whore, so hopefully the two can find the chops to pull this off.
