In college -- as far as musical tastes were concerned -- I was for all intents and purposes a lesbian. I saw the Lilith Fair four times and my 25 CD changer -- a dopey, hulking beast by today's standards but so technologically chic back in 1996 that I was the envy of my dorm -- continuously churned out semi-sapphic serenade after semi-sapphic serenade from female singer songwriters like Sarah Mclachlan, Tori Amos, Jewel, Paula Cole, and the Indigo Girls -- basically anyone with a set of ovaries wielding a guitar or a piano.

Last week I was able to re-live those dyke glory days when I stopped by the SIRIUS XM studios to catch a live performance by the Indigo Girls on Artist Confidential, hosted by award-winning radio personality Lou Brutus. The studios are gorgeous -- it's all glass and blond wood perched on the 36th floor of a midtown skyscraper -- and forty or so journalists and fans piled into chairs set up outside the recording booth while Amy (Ray) (above left) and Emily (Saliers) (above right) sound checked.

The session featured the two singing tracks from their new album, Poseidon and the Bitter Bug, including "Sugar Tongue," "What Are You Like," and "Love Of Our Lives," as well as old favorites ("Closer to Fine," "Yield," and "Galileo") with interview segments with Brutus smattered in between. Emily and Amy chatted about forming the Indigo Girls back in high school, their activism, defeating writer's block, and the things they haven't done but are still dying to do (Amy -- somewhat sheepishly -- admitted she wants to record a Christmas album).

A broadcast date has yet to be assigned for the Indigo Girls' Artist Confidential performance, so keep an eye here for info and updates.
