Britney's Circus not enough lion, too much tamer?

What has been hyped as the biggest concert event of the year kicked off last night: Britney Spears' Circus tour debuted in in her home state of Louisiana at the New Orleans Arena. But according to early reports, it was more of a show-stupor than a showstopper.

Not even the three-ringed set featuring clowns, acrobats, and jugglers or the dazzling costumes designed by DSquared brothers (and Out 100 nominees) Dan and Dean Caten, could save the show, which People.com claims showcased "a lot more strutting than real choreographic feats from Spears." Worse yet -- "there was a decided lack of joy in her performance, which felt labored at times."

Perhaps the most disappointing part of the evening was Spears' lack of engagement with the audience. The singer apparently didn't even address the crowd until after her lone encore, "Womanizer," and spent much of her time (perhaps purposely) being eclipsed by the Cirque du Soleil-inspired aerialists and her back up dancers.

We're hoping this was just an isolated incident due to a case of first night jitters and that by the time Brit gets to New York she's crackin' her whip and kickin' some ass. We've been behind her this long, we're not about to jump off the circus train just yet.
