The musician's truly come into his own.

Ever since Bloc Party frontman Kele Okereke announced he was putting out his sophomore solo album, Trick, I was curious about how it would turn out. The LP’s teaser trailer—because I guess we’re doing those now—hinted that it would be a dancey, electronic record, like his first solo attempt, The Boxer and it looks like that’s gonna be the case. However, if “Doubt” is anything to go by, it won’t be like The Boxer. It’ll be better.

While The Boxer had enthusiasm, it lacked the editing and restraint. “Doubt” indicates that the second time around, Kele’s got a better handle on what he wants to do. Rather than go for an electropop sound, Okereke’s gone the House route. The moody dance anthem makes strategic use of sizzling synths and driving bass so as to showcase spellbinding, brooding vocals.
