The video for newcomer Melissa Laveaux's haunting song "Triggers" is a labyrinth of symbolism and opaque clues. The first minute-and-a-half is nearly silent, as we follow a young woman as she searches for something on an empty beach, but after she finds a bottle that contains a mysterious message, Laveaux's intoxicating, husky vocals kick in--the singer-songwriter describes her style as "indie psychedelic afrorock with strong pop sensibilities" and that definitely begins to captures the complexity of the vibe--and you will have no choice to but to watch and try to decipher the meaning behind this powerful love story between two women. With a touch of Toni Morrison magical realism, the music is haunting and contains a hidden power that must be attributed to Laveaux's quiet intensity.
The French-Canadian's first single, "Postman," from her forthcoming EP--"Memory is a Strange Bell" (out Dec. 3)--also held ethereal riddles accentuated by her blues guitar. And "Triggers" reveals more about this talented young woman who has already received critical acclaim in France, and is poised to reach a new audience eager to find authenticity amid the pop music ruins.
