Kylie Minogue is celebrating the 25th anniversary of her career with the release of The Abbey Road Sessions, 15 orchestral re-recordings of hits from her quarter-century long career and a new single, "Flower."
Though the Australian diva may be better known for sweet vocals laced with thumping club-beats like "Can't Get You Out of My Head" and "Get Out of My Way," Minogue's honeyed voice finally gets a chance to shine on its own in these new, paired down updates of her best singles recorded in the legendary Abbey Road Studios.
The softer, vintage take on these classic songs reveal a new and surprising depth in Minogue's catalog of hits. Once the veil of electronic techno-glow is pulled away, "Come Into My World" becomes a song bursting with longing, Minogue's voice filled with a new and striking tenderness. The cold tension of the original "Confide in Me" is enhanced in the New Abbey Road Sessions version with a mature, mournful chill in Minogue's voice.
"Flower," an incredibly soft track and the only new song on the album fits right it next to classics like "Where The Wild Roses Grow." Slow, once a cool electronic rhythm is now a crooning invitation to bed that recalls the simmering songs of Nina Simone. Like the rest of the album, it sizzles with a new and surprising heat; The Abbey Road Sessions proves that Kylie's on fire and she's showing no sign of going out.
