On Glee this season, Kurt and Rachel have spent a lot of airtime hand-wringing over their applications to NYADA (the fictional New York Academy of the Dramatic Arts). We can just see them now, stepping off a Greyhound with color-coordinated luggage and belting Sinatra in the middle of Times Square (and, a few episodes later, harmonizing to Rihanna on a subway platform for quarters and prayer pamphlets).
Unfortunately, the tuneful twosome won't get their own spin-off next year. Fox Entertainment Chief Kevin Reilly confirmed this yesterday, though Colfer, Michele and Monteith will remain on the show in some capacity. Barring a failure to graduate, or a sudden decision to work on the school's janitorial staff, we assume the kids will be heading out of Lima, and the plots will move back and forth between MicKinley and the world beyond. This seems likely, given Colfer's comment last night at the Fox TCAs: "I really can't emphasize enough that it really will be, kind of, the best of both worlds," he explained. "I really think it's going to be a lot of fun."
So maybe we can look forward to some scenes of subway panhandling after all (or maybe they'll just audition for roles in that Smash musical). Until then, prepare yourselves for the return of Glee on January 17th, where Mr. Schuester finally proposes to the Obsessive-Compulsive of his dreams, Emma. Later episodes will feature guest appearances by Ricky Martin, NeNe Leakes, and a Helen Mirren voice-over.
