Get soaked with Almodóvar's 'I'm So Excited!'

Spanish director Pedro Almodovar is a true auteur, whose work you can recognize from a single frame. No one can touch his storytelling, sense of color, and direction of actresses-just watch how Penelope Cruz shines in his films.

Excited-cockpitHis movies of the past decade, however, have gotten a little too heavy. The Skin I Live In, Broken Embraces, Volver, and the perfect All About My Mother are all quirky--but dead serious meditations on love, family and death, with equal parts Alfred Hitchcock and Douglas Sirk.

So it comes as a relief that Pedro went back to his wacky roots with his airborne new comedy I'm So Excited! (out today in NY and LA).

The film is Almodovar's first full-on farce since Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown and a welcome return to his unique brand of lunacy. Without giving too much away, the plot is about a bunch of sexed-up Spaniards with dirty secrets on board an ill-fated flight to Mexico. Oh, and the campy gay flight attendants who serve them.

Pedro favorite Cecilia Roth is especially great as a doomed dominatrix in an Anna Wintour bob. Once the passengers realize their fates, hilarity ensues, with the gays behaving so badly, they make JetBlue's deranged steward Steven Slater look like a saint. They dope the passengers, fuck the pilots, and lipsynch for their lives to the titular Pointer Sisters song.

By the end of the film, they are literally soaked in booze, drugs and semen (no kidding). It's not very deep or groundbreaking stuff, but I'm So Excited! is a good light summer diversion. I loved every minute of it, and I realize that movies set on planes are actually a favorite of mine. So, I created a list of four of my most beloved in-flight movies.
