Openly gay director Bryan Singer has signed on to get back behind the director's seat for the next X film project, X-Men: Days of Future Past. Singer directed the first two movies of the franchise: 2000's X-Men and 2003's X2, which is regarded as one of the best superhero movies of the last 12 years according to Entertainment Weekly.

Singer recently produced and co-wrote the successful X-Men: First Class, and this new X-men film is supposed to be a sequel to that.

The comic book story plot for which the new film is named after involves time traveling into the past to fix a dark future in which the mutants live, so a speculation could be that all the X films that come after X-Men: First Class, timeline wise, could be altered by the new film.

X-Men: Days of Future Past is set to hit theaters on July 18, 2014, and will feature James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, and Jennifer Lawrence, reprising their roles as younger versions of Prof. Xavier, Magneto, and Mystique, respectively. And with the time traveling, cameos from stars such as Anna Paquin, Halle Berry, Sean Ashmore, Ellen Page, Daniel Cudmore, and of course Hugh Jackman.

But let's not forget: Jackman's second X-men solo film, The Wolverine, is due July 26, 2013, and will be directed by James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:10 to Yuma).

In a Q&A with Marvel, Jackman and Mangold share plot of the film. Fans will get to see Wolverine's famed berserker rage (a state of pure strength, power, and obviously rage), and muscle lovers and heads can rejoice over Jackman's desire to get even more ripped, though "It's not about looking buff," he said. "I wanted to see veins. I wanted to be animalistic. I wanted to look not pretty-- frightening."

But probably the juiciest piece of news is that this film is not following 2009's X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but instead 2006's X-Men: The Last Stand.

"It finds Logan at a point when the X-Men are gone, Jean Gray is gone, a lot of the ties he had to the world are gone," Mangold said. The film will explore Wolverine more in-depth in character, and also his vulnerability, "In this movie ... let's just say he discovers his kryptonite," teases Jackman. The film will be based on the comic book arc of a samurai story in Japan where the enemy is a mystery said Mangold.
